We met up with Luigi Billiani, Director General of Billiani s.r.l & 911 Collection and asked him about the new collection released this year at Milan and what direction Billiani is taking for the furture?
Billiani has released various new designs this year; can you tell us what the inspiration for this collection was?
We are only launching rigorous designs, with clean lines, and all the new models fit into the Billiani 911 Collection, which differs from the Contemporary collection in that the styles vary greatly and cover many market requirements.
Which of the new pieces are your favourite and why?
Cookie is beautiful and is perfectly suited for high end restaurants and this year we are extending the Cookie range with various height stools and tables. Not the most striking of pieces in their own right, these additions do back up the Cookie armchair which has enjoyed spectacular market success in its first year. The Marco Ferreri designed Nordica is a chair which will never fall out of fashion, and which will always remain easy on the eye. No frills, rigorous design with clean lines, Nordica can be placed in any setting thanks to the option of an upholstered seat. Designer Emilio Nanni allows more space for the superfluous whilst remaining clean in his design style.
Is Billiani working with any new designers? Who and why?
We’ve been working with Marco Ferreri since 2001 who designed the Foglia chair. A hammer will always have the shape of a hammer, and with the passage of time it remains a hammer. Ferreri’s chairs are hammers in this respect. Studiocharlie comprises three young designers, Gabriele Rigamonti, Carla Scorda, Vittorio Turla, who surprise you with the lines of the Aragosta (which means Lobster in Italian) side chair, joined now by a new lounge chair.
Where do you see Billiani in 5 years?
Whilst maintaining the Contemporary section with seating that architects need for all manner of projects, we'll still be making chairs chiefly in wood and by famous designers, rather than chairs whose excellent design needs to be appreciated by sophisticated furniture experts. This is in order to raise the brand to the highest Italian standards. Obviously Billiani is committed to raising the standard not only of this design aspect but also across its entire operation.
