The world renowned University of Cambridge is a public research university located in Cambridge. After two years ranking as the world’s number 1 university it’s currently in second place. It is the fourth-oldest surviving university in the world established in 1209. More than 18,000 students are students are studying at 31 colleges that are divided into 150 departments, faculties, schools, syndicates and other institutions. Beside eight arts, cultural and scientific museums they university has 114 distinct libraries. Furthermore the university has put 65 Nobel Prize winners forth, more than any university in the world, with successful applicants including luminaries as impressive as Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking and Sir Isaac Newton.

But because not all students are wealthy enough to be able to finance a study at Cambridge University the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation donated $210 million to create Gates Scholarships for outstanding graduate students who are not from the UK but want to do their postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge. The decision about who gets this special scholarship is made by examining carefully the person’s intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society. So far over 1000 students from 94 different countries have received a Gates scholarship and the university wants to maintain about 200 scholars in residence at any time.

These scholarship holders have their own common rooms that are enjoyed exclusively by them. Together with Chris Levings from Design Cambridge Interiors we designed and manufactured bespoke sofas for these rooms. The red-coloured sofas look modern, comfortable and inviting to relax after a hard day of studying. The upholstered sofa has furthermore broad and soft red cushions on it which can be removed when necessary. An additional eye-catcher is that the sofas’ armrest is blue-coloured which gives the sofas a unique look. The sofas were designed to form two halves of a whole when used in pairs, with the unique curved geometrical shape creating an ellipsoid shape. The two sofas when facing each other create a separate intimate space within the larger common room area. The armpads have been designed with the intention of providing a platform for a laptop computer, while the gentle curves and soft upholstery allow for the sofas to be used for lying, sitting or even (for the more louche) slouching on!
